MathCounts Foundation is a nonprofit that promotes youth math education and innovative problem solving through middle school mathematics coaching and national competitions.
Each year they also have a creative word problem poster illustrated and distributed to schools across the country in an effort to excite an energized attitude towards math.
For the 2015-2016 school year, I took this basic racing problem and gave it a winter spin. The challenge was to appeal to the in-between age group – not too young, but not too old. The result was a theme that focused around skiing and snowboarding – action sports that cover the “cool” requirement needed to peak interest and is a relatable theme for middle schoolers.
